Learning Outcomes

Read and respond to a variety of informational, narrative and graphic texts, maintaining a reading log and reading independently for personal, school and career purposes; describe personally relevant texts and use oral language to support reading.

Understand forms of texts by identifying main ideas and supporting details in information and opinion pieces, using textbook features (tables of contents, indexes, headings, typography) to locate information, comparing narrative and non‑fiction structures, and using layouts of graphic texts to extract key data.

Use pre‑reading strategies (scanning, skimming, previewing) to predict content, activate prior knowledge and monitor comprehension during and after reading using questioning, re‑reading and note‑taking strategies.

Apply the writing process by identifying topic, audience, purpose and form; using brainstorming and mind maps to generate ideas; discussing ideas orally; gathering and organizing information; drafting; revising for logic, tone and relevance; editing for grammar, usage and punctuation; and accurately citing sources.

Write summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces and news reports with clear main ideas and supporting details, using appropriate structure, tone and style for varied purposes (e.g., reports, résumés, covering letters) and adapting news‑report skills to narratives.

Explain the importance of communication skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) for success at school, work and in everyday life and describe the behaviours and attitudes (active participation, confidence, persistence, reflection) needed to promote personal learning.
